What is an estate inventory?

When a person dies, an estate inventory is required by law (except in small estates where there is no real estate or land). The estate inventory is a list of the deceased’s assets and liabilities at current market value. It is necessary to identify who is part of the deceased’s estate and entitled to a share of it. The estate inventory also forms the basis for the subsequent distribution of the estate.

The inventory also shows:
– Creditors with interests to protect
– Secondary heirs with share in future inheritance
– Legatees

What happens after an estate inventory has been completed?

The estate inventory must be submitted to the Swedish Tax Agency within four months of the death. The registered estate inventory then serves as an identification document showing who is authorised to represent the estate.

To avoid disputes between the owners of the estate, we recommend that you consult a lawyer. The lawyer can help you to produce an accurate valuation of the assets and assist in carrying out the practical steps needed to settle the estate.
